Warp Speed

I was at Hill today and Chris Hammel (pictured above wearing a Sandy Tobin original apron) gave us a step by step demonstration of warping from front to back. She has a precise, well-thought-out method that would be a great youtube how-to. The warp we are putting on the loom is an adapted design from Catherine Ellis’ book “Woven Shibori”. The idea is that you weave the “tie-dye” ties into the fabric as you weave. You can then gather the fabric and dye it and the gathered areas will resist the dye. The resist pattern depends on the pattern you choose for the gathering threads. It is an ancient technique in Japan often with indigo dyes, but it seems so new and interesting to me.
